Add and subtract within 100: FAQ
Frequently asked questions about adding and subtract within 100.
Why do we need to learn how to add and subtract within ?
Adding and subtracting within is important because it builds a foundation for more complex math later on. Plus, it's helpful for everyday tasks like counting money or figuring out how many items you have.
How can we use place value blocks to help us add and subtract?
Place value blocks can help us visualize the numbers we're working with. We can use the blocks to break down a number into tens and ones, and then use those parts to help us add or subtract.
What are some strategies for adding within 100?
One strategy is to break apart one of the numbers and make tens. For example, to add , we can break apart the into and . Then, we can add to make , and add the remaining to get a final answer of .
What are some strategies for subtracting within 100?

- Answer in different ways:
First, divide the numbers: 1.2278/3.084 and the round will be:
= 0.3979 then:
if you find the same numerator and denominator:
10^13/10^8 = 10 and subtract exponents 13-8 = 5 so:
10^5 so far will be: 0.3979x10^5 if you move the point to the left subtract the exponent: from 0.3979 you moved -1 so:
5-1 4 answer will be 3.979x10^4. If you take all my instructions you will be it's the same as Sal's explanations but a little bit different approach, but I did some other properties of scientific notation in the division like: a^m/a^n= a^m-n
and in the result, if you move one decimal to the left it's like subtraction that decimal and vice-versa if you move to the right you add more decimals.(1 vote)
